Russian ballets have been created in 1907 by Sergeï Diaghilev, and ended in 1929,after Diaghilev’s dead. Nowadays remain of this company legendary dancers and choreographers, as Balanchine, Nijinski and his sister, Anna Pavlova, Serge Lifar and Fokine. At the beginning Diaghilev had gathered the best members of Mariinsky (St Petersburg). Two years later, the company begins to stand on international stages (Paris, Monte-Carlo, Brussels, London…), and in 1911 Diaghilev turns his ballet company into an independent one.
Russian ballets have been a source of an incredible profusion and fertility of creativity : Cocteau writes several booklets, Braque and Matisse create sets, Debussy and Satie write music, and Gabrielle Chanel is in charge of costumes. This international opening displeases the Sovietic regime, which banishes him as a traitor.
